Every day thousands of people join a social network. Some of them even open their second or third social networking account. They create very individual profiles they pack with their personal information, pictures, special fonts, widgets, colors, music and videos. These profiles look great and are a good way to present oneself to the community. What most people are unaware of is that the information they put into their profiles is accessible by literally anyone who has internet access. Most social networks are open means that the personal profiles of their members a free to browse for everyone. Many outstanding and special profiles even receive back-links from other websites and achieve high rankings in the search-engines.
But what to do about it? Which information to put into the profile and which not? Is there are a way to make my profile private?
Well, it is advised to be cautious on which personal information to share and which not. Many Networks advise their members not to publish their full name and address when their publish a personal picture. So you should limit yourself to your first name or a nickname when using social networks and never post your full name and full address. If you want to protect yourself even further you can set your profile to private means, that only your friends may see your profile. Most of the social networks offer this function, it's a good way to protect your personal information while taking part in social-networking.
If you want to protect your profile information even more you can join social networks that has set the profiles to private automatically. These networks include but are not limited to Facebook and Orkut. Facebook subdivides it's network into sub-networks like High-Schools, Colleges and workplaces. Orkut is a closed social network that you only can join if you have an invitation by one of the existing members. If you experienced in performing online searches it should be easy for you to get such an invitation from someone.
If you are one of the many social network users who wants to display your information, you are encouraged to learn more about private profile settings. Private profile settings will limit the number of individuals who can view your website. Although your profile's private setting may prevent other network members from seeing your profile, it will also prevent anyone else from seeing it. The only catch with doing this is that since other community members cannot see your profile, you will have to be the one to contact with any new friends that you would like to invite to your network.
